Putting things up
Two things to focus on when putting things up:

Make sure you get a good firm attachment.
(see drilling and fixing). Remember when choosing the length of screws for walls they should be long enough to go through the thickness of whatever you're putting up and at least the full length of the wall plug. If you don't get that right you may have problems!

Make sure you get things level. You'll need a spirit level.

I now also use a laser level which have recently come onto the market. They're great. Simply hold them up to the wall and they shine a perfectly level beam across the wall. Laser levels are very useful for getting long straight lines and great when lining things up level side by side like shelf brackets or several paintings. Also very useful when installing kitchen units and so ensuring your granite or formica countertops are perfectly level.
